What
do explorers wear while skiing across Antarctica?
Duffle socks: matted wool inserts that fit in boots to
warm their feet.
Ski boots: oversized to allow for layers of duffle
socks.
Gators: covers the boot and goes up the leg to
the knee. It keeps the snow out.
Long johns: a few layers
Wind jacket
Wind pants
Wool hat with ear flaps
Ear band
Ski ear covers
Heavy gloves
Glacier goggles: goggles with extra dark lenses
to protect the eyes from the sun.
What
do explorers wear while they are sailing on the ice?
Because they get colder while they are sailing they wear
what they wear for skiing and add:
Mittens: instead of gloves
Down vest
Wind clothes
Extra jacket
What
do explorers do when they have to stop for a break?
Because they are not working, they become cold when they
stop. They may add a down parka to what they are already
wearing.
What
do explorers wear inside the tents?
Inside the tent, wind clothes are removed and the following
are added:
Pile (fleece) jacket
Pile (fleece) pants
Light gloves: instead of heavy gloves
One hat: instead of several
Down booties: instead of boots
Balaclava: a piece of clothing that covers the
whole head and neck with an opening for the face.
They
also sit in their sleeping bags to keep warm.
