Plants that live in Antarctica
Although it is summer in Antarctica, we will not see flowers blooming or trees budding. As you have learned from our past commentaries, Antarctica has a very harsh, cold climate which makes it very inhospitable for plant life. Having said that, there are some very hearty species of plant life that can be found on the coastline of Antarctica, but other than an insect called the midge which measures less than 1/2 inch in length (12mm), no plant or animal life exist on the interior of the continent.

Most of the plant life in Antarctica can be found on the Antarctic Peninsula. Many species of lichens and moss exist there. We started our journey on Queen Maud Land thus will see very little if any plant life. Learn in this Polar Activity about the different types of plants on and around Antarctica and how their existence is very important to the survival of many species that live in and around the coastline of Antarctica
