What can I do?

Tips for how you can reduce your emissions

How can my family and I reduce emissions of CO2 to hinder global warming? Many of the tips below not only help reduce emissions, but can also save your family money. Maybe you can even keep the savings as pocket money?

Use alternatives to cars and planes
  • Use the car less or switch to an environmentally friendly car that uses less fuel.
  • Walk or ride your bike for short trips.
  • Use public transportation or carpool when you can.
  • Take the train instead of a plane whenever possible.

Use less energy at home
  • Lower your thermostat in the winter and raise it in the summer.
  • Insulate your house and adapt your windows to the climate you live in.
  • Install a low-flow shower head so you can cut your use of hot water for showering in half.
  • Use renewable energy such as wind power, solar power, or biomass.
  • Switch to long-life bulbs and use timers on electric appliances.
  • Turn off electrical equipment completely instead of leaving it in stand-by mode.

Think before you buy
  • Recycle and use resources over again. All extraction and production of raw materials requires energy and gives off emissions.
  • Think twice before throwing something away and buying a new one.
  • Consider how the goods you buy have been produced and transported.

Get involved
  • Ask your friends at school and in your neighborhood what they are doing to help reduce emissions of greenhouse gases.
  • Become politically active and help decision-makers get acceptance for necessary climate policy, such as higher electricity and gasoline prices.
